Een toegankelijke wereld voor iedereen.

Altijd en overal.

At Mijksenaar, we design for everyone with an inclusive mindset. At every step, we consider and take care of the user’s needs. With this approach, Mijksenaar designs, studies, and examines how wayfinding can cultivate orientation, navigation, and experience for everyone, everywhere.

We consider it our responsibility and obligation to challenge the societal stereotypes and binaries that hinder progress. Communicating with clients, stakeholders, architects, potential and future users, and construction workers throughout the process helps us to understand and improve.

We make wayfinding for people on every spectrum, whether it is literacy, neurodiversity, mobility, or visibility, by developing wayfinding solutions that are multifaceted and multisensory. Mijksenaar utilizes technology that collects flow data, on-site user surveys, and tailored methods that empathize with and prioritize the user.

Our team considers the minute details, whether in an office bathroom, an airport prayer room, an inter-city bridge, a museum exhibition, a hospital, or a beach boulevard. Our information systems help everyone find their way and connect with their surroundings regardless of age, gender, race, sex, ability, culture, ethnicity, nationality, or religion.

Inclusivity Whitepaper

Public restrooms have become a focal point for LGBTQ+ people whose needs are not met by current design standards. Motivated by questions from several clients, we realized it was time to rethink wayfinding for restrooms. In 2020 Mijksenaar explored this complex topic by conducting various types of research in which the LGBTQ+ community was actively involved.

The result? A whitepaper with our findings and a toolkit for inclusive restrooms for everyone to access and use. After two years, we are proud that this toolkit has helped us, our clients, and our peers to make informed decisions that work for everyone.

Inclusivity toolkit for PON

Pon is globally renowned for its products, services, and mobility solutions. They help millions of people in the Netherlands every day to move from A to B on a bike or in a car imported by them. With more than 16,500 employees in over 65 countries, they have positioned themselves as expert and market leader.

At the start of 2022, Pon reached out to Mijksenaar for advice. How do you create bathrooms where every employee feels welcome? Together with Pon, we wrote a white paper including the best techniques we made after doing empathy research and sourcing user input on pictograms, getting to know the community, conducting surveys, and performing usability testing at Schiphol.

Numbering for neurodivergent employees at ASML

At ASML, the world’s leading chipmaker, many employees are neurodivergent. Therefore, we tailored the wayfinding to optimize their work days as they move throughout the space.

By retaining specific and lengthy numbering, which may otherwise seem like too much information for neurotypical people, the employees who connect with and prefer long numbering sequences easily find every part of the building.

deSingel is accesible to all

We assisted deSingel, an international arts center in Belgium, in ensuring they were inclusive. As a result, the accessibility page on their website outlines their services, including audio descriptions for the visually impaired, parking and aid for people who use wheelchairs and walking frames, inclusive toilets, and ear protection for the noise sensitive.

Rijksmuseum - Inclusivity Conference

On October 3rd, 2022, our Inclusivity Lead Jolein attended an inclusivity conference at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where the museum presented its vision on accessibility.

“Accessibility begins by realizing that there are barriers that make it difficult for people to access or feel unwelcome. We want to remove these barriers so that everybody can have access to the collection on an equal and independent way.”
