Simplifying and enriching Dutch Railways
In 1998, Dutch Railways was restructured into a privately owned enterprise and split into two companies: carrier (NS) and infrastructure (ProRail). This created an excellent opportunity to renew the wayfinding of all of the railway stations.
Mijksenaar designed a standard information system that fits all types of stations. From small regional train stops to larger and complex city transportation hubs. The system uses only neutral, non-commercial transport elements.
Small captions within the pictogram areas help inexperienced travelers with memory cues. The use of UIC (International Union of Railways) pictograms increases familiarity.
‘In the end, Mijksenaar managed to both simplify and enrich [the wayfinding system] at the same time.’ (Trouw newspaper)
